課程概述

Course Description:
This graduate-level course explores the complex network of connections between literary production and the rapid expansion of the British Empire in the Romantic era. Literary texts will span poetry, prose, and drama, as we examine the formal structures and rhetorical strategies through which British Romantic writers variously internalized, interrogated, or struggled with the question of empire. We will analyze how a multitude of cultural issues that arise from global trade and geopolitics – including race, orientalism, and gender – are inscribed with elaborate intricacy in the literary text.

Class will be conducted entirely in English; class meetings will retain the graduate seminar format, with a combination of instructor lectures and student presentations.

Students will gain familiarity with widely read texts in the British Romantic period and be able to relate literary texts to their macro-historical contexts.
